Yum Asia Award Winning Rice Cookers

Panda’s Features And Functions

Panda has multi-menu selections which uses Micom (micro-computerised) Fuzzy logic technology to control the temperature for the efficient cooking of many different types of rice including long grain, short grain and brown rice and a quick cook option if you want the rice cooked a little faster.

Rice bowl

Panda is designed to cook rice using 7 distinct phases to produce perfect rice every time and to carefully retain nutrients. These phases are Preheat, Absorb water, Heating, Boiling, Braising, Absorb water and then finally Keep warm (in this order). This phased cooking and adjustments in temperature are controlled using Panda’s fuzzy logic processor and ensure perfectly cooked rice every time.

Unique to Yum Asia’s rice cookers is a 24 hours automatic keep warm - it keeps rice at an ideal serving temperature until it's ready to be served. There is a countdown indicator during the cooking cycle and when the rice is cooked a beep sounds and the cooker automatically shifts to keep warm mode. For added convenience, there is a pre-set time function which can be set up to 24 hours in advance, so you can have delicious rice ready for when you come in from work or nice, steaming hot porridge waiting on a cold winter's morning.

Panda has a Korean designed 'Smart Button' control panel with an easy to use ice white crisp and bright LED display. The buttons have been thoroughly tested for repeated pushing and to be hard wearing in even the most extreme kitchen conditions.

We have designed every aspect of Panda with our customers in mind; we were tired of customers telling us that their rice cooker inner bowls would often disintegrate or become unstable. We designed the Ninja bowl to overcome these issues, it’s a hard-wearing, 5 layer inner bowl with a 2mm thick ceramic coating which is BPA-free and PTFE-free, with easy-lift handles. The inner lid, steam cap and condensation collector are all removable for easy cleaning.

Like other fuzzy logic rice cookers, Panda has a heating element on the inside bottom of the unit, however, it also has a unique 3D heating technology as well. This means that the heat from the heating element is dispersed around the sides of the bowl and heat also comes from the lid to apply heat downwards into the inner bowl. This 3D heating technology ensure the even cooking of rice and other dishes.

With your Panda you will receive a rice measuring cup for convenient rice measurements to cook just the amount of rice you need. You get a rice spatula with dimpled surface to help with rice service and a soup ladle; uniquely on a rice cooker this size, a steaming basket is included which is perfect for steaming vegetables and other foods. We also provide a 3 pin UK power cord, however this can be easily swapped out (plug and use) with a corresponding power cord for your country or you can use a readily available adapter to fit your power socket.

Panda has a ceramic coated ‘ninja-hard’ inner bowl, 2mm thick with a special 5 layer composition and BPA and PTFE free, you can be confident your inner bowl is hard-wearing, durable and healthy

What Are The Cooking Phases Using Advanced Fuzzy Logic?

Panda advanced fuzzy logic cooking phases

Panda uses advanced fuzzy logic to ensure rice is cooked perfectly every time. The graph above shows how the fuzzy logic processor adjusts the temperature using the weight and detecting the heat inside the bowl along with pre-programmed conditions to cook rice on a typical cooking cycle. Below is a more detailed explanation of this process.

Preheat – Panda starts to gently heat the rice and water in the inner bowl to start the cooking cycle; this is key to the release of sugars into the water from the rice grains.

Steam – The steaming part of the cooking cycle enables the rice to continue cooking while reabsorbing the sugars in the remaining water back into the rice whilst simulateously evaporating the remaining water. This part of the cooking cycle makes the rice taste sweeter.

Absorb Water – This phase of the cooking cycle slightly increases the cooking temperature so the rice can start absorbing the water.

Cool Down – This water balancing part of the cooking cycle ensures there is no remaining water left

Heating – The temperature is increased again to start heating the water and rice in the inner bowl to start the cooking process of the rice.

Keep Warm and Steam – The final part of the cooking cycle is to hold steady at the perfect temperature to continue to steam the rice. This ensures the rice is perfectly cooked, fluffy and delicious

Boiling – Panda rapidly increases the temperature to 100˚C, boiling point to evaporate the majority of the water from the inner bowl and to cook the rice part way.

Bad Good

We often get asked questions about the products we sell, here is a selection of the questions which you may have about Panda by Yum Asia.

What is Panda by Yum Asia?

Panda completes Yum Asia's range of rice cookers. Yum Asia has been the home of Zojirushi in the UK and Europe for over 10 years; we have worked with Japanese rice cooking technologies and learned exactly how they work and their best and most useful features. We realised that the cookers did not always fit into everyone’s budget. We also realised that whilst some models ticked all the boxes of what a customer wants from a rice cooker, sometimes certain models didn't tick all those boxes. We therefore spent many months thinking and designing a rice cooker with functions that were most appealing to people that love Asian food with the core emphasis being based around cooking great tasting rice along with features that small models usually do not have.

What voltage is Panda and what plug is it supplied with?

Panda is a 220-240v rice cooker and it is factory made for UK and European power. It is supplied with a 3-pin UK plug. However, if you live in Europe you can opt to add a 2 pin EU plug for £2.50 extra – select using the available options before adding to cart.

What accessories are included with Panda?

A measuring cup, spatula, soup ladle, steaming basket and manual are included with this rice cooker.

I don't understand the capacity

Panda has two different types of capacity. It is a 0.6 litres, 3.5 cup rice cooker or 1.75 litres multi-cooker.

Let's take the first two capacities - 0.6 litres or 3.5 cup. Rice cooker capacities are always referred to in litres or cups. Panda is a 0.6 litres capacity rice cooker and it can therefore cook 3.5 cups of uncooked white rice or 2.5 cups of uncooked brown rice - each cup is 180ml/g. So, if you want to cook 1 cup of white rice, that would be 180g or if you want to cook the full capacity of 3.5 cups, that would be 630g of uncooked rice.

The third capacity of 1.75 litres refers to Panda’s multi-cooking capacity. This means that the inner bowl can hold a maximum of 1.75 litres of liquid.

What types of rice can I cook in Panda?

We designed Panda to primarily be a rice cooker and it cooks different types of rice perfectly. Panda has different options for cooking rice:

‘LONG GRAIN’ setting is for cooking long grain white rice (for example, basmati, jasmine or Thai fragrant rice)
‘SHORT GRAIN’ setting is for any type of white short grain rice like pearl or sushi rice and Thai sticky rice.
‘BROWN’ setting is for cooking long or short grain brown rice
‘QUICK COOK’ setting (for white rice only) for when you want the rice completed a little faster.

How does Panda cook the rice, is it boiled?

No, Panda does not simply boil the rice. As it is a micom fuzzy logic rice cooker, is designed to cook rice using 7 distinct phases to produce perfect rice every time and to carefully retain nutrients. These phases are Preheat, Absorb water, Heating, Boiling, Braising, Absorb water and then finally Keep warm (in this order). This phased cooking and adjustments in temperature are what produces perfect rice every time.

What add-on functions are there on Panda and are they any good?

As well as being a fantastic rice cooker, we hand chose the add-on multi-cooker features of Panda ourselves based on customer feedback we have received over the last 10 years.

The add-on functions we chose are:

Porridge (for rice or oat porridge), Steam, Slow cook and Cake baking.

We have extensively tested each function with excellent results. You can cook soups, casseroles, whole joints of meat, delicious cakes, steam any kind of food and much more in Panda with amazing results.

Where is Panda made?

Panda is manufactured in dedicated Chinese factories which also make premium brand rice cookers like Cuckoo, Cuchen and Tiger brands. Our factory conforms to the highest international standards and has comprehensive quality control and manufacturing procedures which we have had independently inspected.

Is it ok to cook a small amount of rice in this cooker?

Yes. There isn’t any problem cooking half a cup of rice in this rice cooker, we made sure that Panda can do this successfully – half a cup of rice comes out as perfectly as when you cook the full 3.5 cup capacity of rice.

What is the maximum capacity for brown rice in Panda?

You can only cook 2.5 cups of brown rice in a 3.5 cup capacity rice cooker. This is because brown rice absorbs water differently to white rice and expands differently during the cooking process.

Is the display in English and what language does the manual come in?

Yes. The display and menu is in English and the supplied manual is also in English. No other language options are available for the manual. To take a look at Panda’s manual, it is available to download further up this page (under the ‘Add to Cart’ button).
